Overview

Problem

Diagnostic centres in Dhaka take 300 to 600 calls a day per branch, mostly patients asking for test prices, fasting rules, sample times and whether their reports are ready. Receptionists miss about a third of calls at peak hours, callers switch between Bangla and English mid-sentence, and every missed call is a patient who may try the centre down the road.

Solution

Shunbo answers every call in natural Bangla, including Dhaka and Chattogram accents and mixed Bangla-English. It connects to the centre's lab system to quote prices, book home sample collection and read out report status, then hands the call to a person with a summary when a patient is upset or asks a medical question.

Target market

Bangladesh has more than 10,000 private diagnostic centres and clinics; we start with the roughly 450 multi-branch centres in Dhaka that run their own call desks.

Business model

Monthly plan per centre from BDT 45,000 including 15,000 minutes, with per-minute overage and a one-time setup fee for lab system integration.

Missed calls went from a third to almost none

Our call desk used to miss roughly one call in three between 9 and 11 am. With Shunbo the phone is answered in seconds, home sample bookings go straight onto the phlebotomists' routes, and staff only take the calls that need a person. Patients do not seem to mind talking to it, even older callers.

Sounds local, not like a translated script

Listening to recorded calls, what stood out is how naturally the agent moves between Bangla and English test names, the way people actually speak in Dhaka. Handoffs to staff come with a short summary so patients do not repeat themselves. Refund requests still often end in frustration because they need the cashier.

Serious speech work on code-switched Bangla

An 8.4% word error rate on live, noisy, code-switched calls is a credible number, and the team showed me its evaluation set rather than just quoting it. They are candid that Sylheti accents still fail too often. Refusing to interpret medical reports at all keeps it away from answers that could hurt patients.

    Reply from Nusrat Jahan, CEO

Sylheti data collection is under way with two partner centres; we'll publish updated error rates by accent.

A high-volume first vertical with zero churn so far

Diagnostic centres are a smart first vertical: high call volume, repetitive questions and a direct link to revenue through home sample bookings. Nine groups and no churn is a good sign. Revenue per centre is still modest, so the outbound reminders product will matter for growth.
