Overview

Problem

Many Filipino children reach Grade 4 without reading a short paragraph fluently, and a Grade 2 teacher with 45 pupils can listen to each child read aloud for only a few minutes a month. Parents want to help at home, but many work long shifts or are unsure how to correct English pronunciation. Reading assessments happen on paper twice a year, too late to change anything that term.

Solution

Bigkas Reads listens as a child reads a short levelled story aloud on a parent's phone, detects skipped, misread and hesitated words in Filipino or English, and replies with gentle prompts. Each week the teacher sees words correct per minute for every child and the sounds the class is struggling with. Stories download in advance, so practice works without data after setup.

Target market

Public and private elementary schools, local governments and reading programmes in the Philippines, which has around 13 million elementary pupils; Indonesia and Vietnam would follow.

Business model

Free for families; schools and local governments would pay per pupil per year (around ₱120), with deployments sponsored by companies' education programmes.

Gentle with children, useful for teachers

I watched a seven-year-old read 'Ang Bangka ni Lolo' to the app, get stuck on 'mangingisda' and try again after a prompt instead of giving up. The teacher view is just as thoughtful, listing pupils by number and the sounds the class finds hard. It is a small pilot, but the design choices are right.

    Reply from Andrea Villanueva, CEO

Thank you, Grace. Keeping prompts short and kind took many rounds of testing with the Grade 1 class.

Fits a real gap between classroom and home

Reading assessments twice a year leave teachers guessing, and weekly words-correct-per-minute data is a big step. Offline stories matter for families on prepaid data. Coverage beyond Filipino and English, such as Cebuano or Ilocano, will decide how far this goes outside Metro Manila.

    Strong founders, very early evidence

Five weeks and 112 children is too little to claim learning gains, and Andrea says so herself. What I like is that home practice is already at 61% of sessions, which suggests parents will use it. The business case depends on local governments paying per pupil, which will take time to prove.
